  • Fortinet or Sangfor: Which Firewall Fits Your Organisation?
Firewall and cybersecurity banner

Many organisations in Tanzania, South Sudan and Rwanda ask the same question when it is time to replace an old router or an out-of-support firewall: should we choose Fortinet or Sangfor? Both are established security vendors, and both are available and supported through local partners in East Africa. The right answer depends less on which brand is “better” and more on how your organisation works, what you already own and who will manage the firewall every day.

This guide explains what each vendor does well, the questions to ask before you buy, and a simple way to decide.

What both firewalls have in common

Before looking at the differences, it helps to know that Fortinet FortiGate and Sangfor Network Secure (formerly known as Sangfor NGAF) are both next-generation firewalls. In practice, both can:

  • Inspect traffic, not just block ports. They recognise applications, users and known threats, and apply rules based on them.
  • Prevent intrusions and malware. Both include intrusion prevention, antivirus and web filtering, kept up to date through vendor threat intelligence subscriptions.
  • Provide secure remote access. Staff working from home or the field can connect through VPN.
  • Connect branches. Both support site-to-site VPN and SD-WAN features to link offices over fibre, 4G or other links.
  • Be managed centrally. Both offer tools to manage many sites from one place and produce reports for management and auditors.

So the decision is not about whether one can protect you and the other cannot. It is about fit.

Where Fortinet stands out

Strong for multi-branch networks

FortiGate firewalls include SD-WAN as part of the operating system, so the same box that secures a branch also manages its internet links and fails over when the main link drops. This makes Fortinet a natural choice for banks, microfinance institutions and retail chains with many small sites.

A wide range of models

The FortiGate range runs from compact desktop units for small offices up to large appliances for data centres. You can standardise on one platform from head office to the smallest agent point.

A broad security ecosystem

Fortinet’s Security Fabric connects the firewall with its switches, Wi-Fi access points, endpoint protection and central tools such as FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer. If you plan to build out your network and security over time, staying within one ecosystem can simplify management.

Where Sangfor stands out

Ease of use for smaller IT teams

Many organisations in the region have one or two IT staff covering everything. Sangfor’s interface and reporting are designed to be approachable, which helps teams see risks and act on them without deep firewall specialisation.

Detection and response across the network

Sangfor Network Secure can work together with Sangfor Endpoint Secure and Sangfor Cyber Command, so threats seen on the network and on computers can be linked and handled together. This is useful for organisations that want better visibility of what is happening inside the network, not just at the edge.

A good match if you run Sangfor infrastructure

Sangfor also offers hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) for running servers and virtual machines. If you already use, or are planning, Sangfor HCI in your server room, adding Sangfor security keeps support and management with one vendor.

Five questions to help you decide

1. How many sites do you need to connect?

One head office with a few remote users has different needs from a network of 40 branches. For many branches with mixed internet links, built-in SD-WAN and central branch management should be at the top of your list. Ask to see how a new branch is set up and monitored, not just the data sheet.

2. Who will manage the firewall every day?

A firewall is only as good as its configuration. If you have an experienced network engineer, either platform will serve you well. If your IT team is small, look closely at which interface they find easier, and whether you want a partner to manage it for you.

3. What do you already own?

Check your switches, Wi-Fi, endpoint protection and server platform. Choosing a firewall that works well with what you have, or with what you plan to buy next, avoids duplicate tools and extra training.

4. How much traffic will you have with security switched on?

Vendor data sheets show several throughput figures. The one that matters is performance with full threat protection and SSL inspection enabled. Size the firewall for your internet bandwidth and user numbers over the next three to five years, not just today.

5. What is the total cost over the life of the firewall?

The hardware is only part of the cost. Security subscriptions, support contracts, central management licences and renewals all add up. Compare quotes over three or five years, and make sure both include the same services so you are comparing like with like.

A simple way to choose

  • Lean towards Fortinet if you run many branches, need strong SD-WAN, want one platform from small office to data centre, or plan to add Fortinet switches and Wi-Fi.
  • Lean towards Sangfor if you have a small IT team that values simple management, want firewall and endpoint protection working closely together, or already use Sangfor HCI.
  • Test before you commit. Where possible, run a proof of concept on your own network so your team can see real traffic, reports and day-to-day management.

A quick firewall buying checklist

  • Have you listed all sites, internet links and the number of users at each?
  • Is the firewall sized for throughput with threat protection and SSL inspection switched on?
  • Are security subscriptions and support included in the quote, and for how many years?
  • Do you know who will configure, update and monitor the firewall?
  • Will it give you the logs and reports your auditors and management ask for?
  • Is there a local partner who can respond quickly if something goes wrong?
